World Natural Heritage Site・Shiretoko

2005.07 Certified as a World Natural Heritage Site

Shiretoko is the Japanese adaptation of the word Sir etok, which means

in the Ainu language.

Located on Hokkaido’s Eastern peninsula, the Shiretoko peninsula is home to the Shiretoko National Park. Said to be Japan’s last frontier, the vibrations of this wilderness touch all who visit it.

Shiretoko Map

Shiretoko Aurora

Witness primeval borders untouched by man from the Shiretoko sightseeing boat Aurora.
Steep, 200-meter cliffs are accented by unusual carousel formation-like marine caves.
You'll delight in the lively waterfalls that lead into the Sea of Okhotsk, and the seasonally-changing vibrant colors of the Shiretoko mountain range.

Animal in Shiretoko

The Shiretoko Peninsula also offers a wild animal park. Brown bears, Yezo deer, Ezo red fox, white-tailed eagle, Steller’s sea eagle, and Blakiston’s fish owl comprise a unique ecosystem of birds and wildlife.

Seals and dolphins inhabit the sea, while unusual rock formations play home to colonies of slaty-backed gulls, black-tailed gulls, and Japanese cormorants.
If you're lucky, you just might encounter some of these animals as you take in the magnificent scenery.
